Territory businesses reaping rewards from Bruce Munro: Tropical Light

Bruce Munro: Tropical Light exhibition has helped draw locals and visitors alike to the CBD in a boost for local businesses.

Darwin businesses were encouraged to create tailor-made Tropical Light-themed products through an industry development initiative run by Tourism NT.  Many did so and have leveraged the increase in visitors to the CBD since the eight illuminated sculptures were installed.

Businesses that have noticed an increase in customers include Trampoline Gelato, The Cav and Lazy Susan’s Eating House.

Other entrepreneurs, including Darwin artist Paul Arnold and members of the Darwin City Waterfront Retailers Association, have noticed their involvement in Tropical Light has created new opportunities for them.

“Tropical Light has been incredible for my role as an artist, for my business and for other businesses in Darwin in terms of collaboration,” Mr Arnold said.

“The exhibition has given rise to alternative products and thought processes, and the opportunity to lead the Northern Territory as an artist.”

Darlene Chin and Elena Gomatos of the Darwin City Waterfront Retailers Association both said Tropical Light has been great for the CBD over the Tropical Summer.

“I’ve been genuinely moved to see so many people coming out to walk the Tropical Light trail, and take in the sights and sounds of Bruce Munro’s beautiful, thoughtful work, as well as those of our talented local artists,” Ms Chin said.

“The Tropical Light exhibition, in addition to the Street Art Festival, provides another niche market to our tourism industry and promotes the growing art scene,” Ms Gomatos added.

The Territory Labor Government is revitalising the Darwin CBD through many measures, including drawing customers into the city centre through the Street Art Festival and Laneway Series.

Cooling the CBD is another way this Government is encouraging Territorians to rediscover the Darwin CBD, with the Austin Lane shade structure completed last week and State Square underground car park now operational.

The Bruce Munro: Tropical Light exhibition, which is part of the Territory Labor Government’s Turbocharging Tourism initiative, is the first city-wide Bruce Munro exhibition in the world. It will run until 30 April 2020.
