Cracking Celebrations in Store for 2022 Territory Day

The countdown to this year’s Territory Day is on, with an exciting program of events organised for the much-anticipated celebrations on 1 July.

To celebrate the day the NT declared independence from the Commonwealth Government in 1978, a number of events including fireworks displays, concerts and community celebrations will be held from the Top End right down to the Red Centre.

The theme of this year’s Territory Day celebrations is ‘How Good is the Territory!’. Territorians have been encouraged to share an image capturing what they love about the NT for the chance to win one of two $2,500 Territory Experience Vouchers. There is still plenty of time to enter, with entries closing at 11.59pm ACST on Friday, 1 July 2022.

Territory Day celebrations in the Top End will again be held at Darwin’s iconic Mindil Beach, with Aussie supergroup AUSTRALIAN ROCK COLLECTIVE to take to the stage. Music fans will also be able to enjoy performances from DRAFTDAY, Caiti Baker, DJ Lady Kay, Lena Kellie, Mandy Garling and Pearl, to name a few. An unmissable fireworks display will also be held at Mindil Beach on 1 July at 8.15pm, in addition to the famous sunset markets which kick off at 4pm.

Those in the Red Centre will be treated to a Territory Day extravaganza from 5.30pm – 8.30pm in partnership with the annual Alice Springs Show. The ever-popular band members from Chunky Custard will perform their well-known ‘70s and Beyond Show, and Tanzanian rapper, musician and hip-hop artist Katanga Junior will also wow crowds with a high-energy set. The official fireworks display will begin at 8pm in Alice Springs, with a range of food stalls and side show alley activities also on offer as part of the celebrations.

Katherine will host a Territory Day bash featuring DJ Charly T and support, while Tennant Creek’s event will feature Desert Eagles, Newboys, Barkly Drifters, MB Reggae and WMC Allstars. Nhulunbuy residents will also be treated to performances from King Stingray and Harry & the Walkers, before their official fireworks display at 8:15pm. A further 14 events will take place across the Territory. All events will feature fireworks displays.

Fireworks will be available to purchase between 9am and 9pm on Friday, 1 July, and can be legally lit between 6pm and 11pm on the same day.

Locals and visitors alike are reminded that private fireworks are not permitted at Territory Day events.

Free public transport will be available to attend the Territory Day celebrations at Mindil Beach in Darwin, and also in Alice Springs as part of the Alice Springs Show.
